Building a ferrocement water cistern |

We're looking for bright, detail oriented good workers, fun to be around, who have an solid foundation of existing skills to build from, and who can put valuable training to good use.
This is a rare opportunity to earn clean money while being trained to do good at a high level. Compensation can include money, training, and possibly room and board, matched to your skill level, commitment, and the quality and quantity of work done.
People have found it possible to live better with dramatically less money while working here.
The learning value of these positions is generally comparable to what you'd otherwise be paying for in grad school or expensive private courses.
Oasis has attracted exceedingly well qualified people in the past.
While the rest of the economy is tanking, we need your help for our growing business. Demand for Oasis's information and services is strong. Our book sales are increasing, we currently turn away 80% of consulting and speaking requests, and have dozens of desperately needed books and DVD's to finish, hundreds of web pages to add, and dozens of original designs to patent and licence.
We've accumulated nearly 30 years of integrated, original designs and information on how to live better with less use of resources, and (now that masses of people are finally interested) we've got just a few years to get it out there while it can still make a difference.
If you are a generalist with strong specific skills, detail orientation, and self-management ability, perhaps you can help us get through this bottleneck. If you are a specialist tired of being part of the problem instead of the solution, perhaps our new information manager can send some work your way.
The job descriptions and schedules are flexible. The positions listed above can be combined, split, or expanded as needed to fit them to people we want to work with. We would inventory your skills and needs, and then if it looked like a good fit, mesh them with Oasis's work needs in the optimal way.
Note: we're deep in various projects at the moment, and aren't very good at responding quickly. Please check in with us a week or so after sending in your material.
Take over the in house publishing of our Oasis's original designs and information in books, web, articles, presentations, workshops, and DVDs. Direct outside editors, proofreaders, graphic artists, webmaster video editors, photographers etc., while doing as much of the work as you can/ want to/ have to yourself.
Includes both the maintenance and revision of our existing 1000 pages ± on the web, in books, video, and presentations, and the publishing of a much vaster reserve of original, unpublished material.
The ideal candidate would be—
The ideal candidate would have high-level skill in many of the areas below, probably from many years or a few decades of experience. They'd be able to learn the rest quickly, or manage and integrate the work of others in any skill areas missing:
In
Said another way...transforming raw information/ designs into finished products ready for publication on the web, in print and in video:
Examples of projects:
It's probably true that less than one person in several hundred is qualified for this job...but it's also true that probably less than one person in several hundred has a job this cool.
The weekly hours could be anywhere between 10 and 40 depending primarily on your ability to self-manage, and can be fit around kid's school schedule, travel, or whatever. 20 hours a week is most likely.
Our pay scale is competitive compared to other "activist" type work, lower than auctioning the talents above to the highest bidder, and very competitive on supporting overall quality of life.
We typically have a trial period with a trial wage of about 30 days in duration. Complete a couple large projects that generate new revenue streams, and get more oriented towards working independently, (six months-2 years, depending on experience and ability) and the pay would rise commensurately.
Much of the work could be done from home, especially as training progresses, though presence in the office is desirable.
If you're interested in the position or helping out with particular specialties, please fill out an Employment application.
Maintain the office and its related systems—5 to 10 hours a week
The ideal candidate would be—
This position consists largely of maintaining, and refining existing systems, as well as support for projects. It is rare for any given task to take more than a couple hours. Because this work is spread pretty thinly over the week, it would be ideal to combine it with the position above or below.
If you're interested in this position, please fill out an Employment application.
The work consists primarily of maintaining and expanding this web site, including generating scripts, maintaining various web gizmos, maintaining optimal interface between our site and it's e commerce functionality, and possibly including shifting it's structure to database-driven or content management/ presentation software of our own design sometime in the next 5 years.
A high level of competency is essential.
You can get some of an idea of our approach from our Web design page. The core web guru tasks take several hours at odd intervalseach month or two. There is usually minimal time pressure or schedule constraints for implementation or maintenance, although there are troubleshooting emergencies once in a while.
If you're interested in this position, please fill out an Employment application.
Sort through days of video, audio, and images, and generate instructional DVDs. Experience, track record, and ability to work independently a must. Lack of familiarity with the material might be a plus.
We have done essentially nothing beyond this web site for marketing for the past several years...and somehow our two plumbing books are the best selling on the the internet, our search rankings are very high for a wide range of search terms, and our sales are rising. Imagine if we actually did some marketing...
There's a lot of low fruit opportunities to increase sales, including:
The ideal candidate would be—
This position is almost completely flexible as to total number of hours, schedule, and location. The total hours would probably be under 20 a week. Because this work is spread pretty thinly over the week, it would be ideal to combine it with the position above or below.
Someone who could serve both as Marketing/ Salesperson and Industrial Design Rep would be especially attractive because of the synergies that would result...though I believe the latter position requires such a high skill/ experience level that it might be overkill for the book sales aspect.
If you're interested in this position, please fill out an Employment application.
We have nearly thirty years worth of unique, useful designs, many of which are patentable, which have never been shopped around. We're picturing a partnership here with someone who would help us sort through our collection of designs, prioritize the marketing of them, identify prospects to produce them, and negotiate agreements. Payment could be based on a combination of payment for effort invested and a percentage of returns.
Examples:
To prosecute patent applications for selected designs, paid on a sliding scale with a portion of risk and return shared.
We're taking applications for fall/ winter
We're also seeking a couple or two skilled individuals to help out and learn by building... a ferrocement roof, ferrocement rainwater cistern, cob wall, glass wall, earth plaster, passive and active solar space heating and stonework, artistically tiled water slide, and wood burning bathtub. Learn a ton about ecological design and construction, while working hard on a fun project, with breaks and community work days. Besides learning value comparable to workshops costing thousands of dollars elsewhere, the compensation can include room, board and possibly money commensurate to skills in plumbing, carpentry, or masonry.
If you're interested, please fill out an Employment application.
The Oasis office/home is located in a small community in a beautiful canyon in the mountains behind Santa Barbara (more about the site). Many people who have worked with us have also lived or camped here, shared food, cars, child care, etc.
We eat vegetarian and nearly 100% organic. Our renovated 1920 summer cabin on a quarter acre features earth building, intensive edible landscaping with 40 varieties of fruit trees, vegetable garden, solar hot water, solar space heating, and a wide variety of energy and water conserving features, with more constantly being added. There is a fully equipped carpentry/masonry/wood/bicycle workshop, and a fully equipped office. There is a nice room and place to camp outside. This is a highly sought after place to live. We have an outdoor bathing garden, and an exceptionally nice wild swimming hole nearby. We do office work outside when we can, and when we're not working we're generally swimming, trail running, biking, or dancing.
